Myths & facts about hair

Does your hair get healthier from brushing it 100 strokes a day? Does a flaky scalp means you have dandruff? Can your hair get used to a shampoo causing it to stop working? We list five common hair myths and tell you if they're true or not. So grab your pen and paper - it's time to take hair notes.

SOME FUN HAIR FACTS:

» You have an average of 120,000 hairs on your head.
» People lose around 60 to 100 hairs a day.
» A hair lives 2 to 7 years.
» After your bone marrow, hair grows the fastest in your body.

MYTH #1:
YOUR HAIR GROWS FASTER WHEN YOU CUT IT MORE OFTEN

We've all been told that cutting your hair regularly makes it grow faster. We're here to tell you that you've been led astray. While trimming your hair certainly makes it look thicker and healthier because you are cutting away the thin, split ends, cutting your hair does not make it grow faster. After all, your hair grows from the hair follicles in your scalp. A longer piece is not added to the bottom of your hair each time. But don't let that delay your visit to a hairdresser! It does make your hair healthier and more elastic and don't we all want that?

MYTH #2:
FLAKY SCALP? THAT MUST MEAN I HAVE DANDRUFF!

Do you suffer from an itchy scalp? Do you notice white flakes on your black clothing? Don't reach for your bottle Head & Shoulders just yet (we beg you), but take a moment to evaluate. Anti-dandruff shampoos can make the itchy feeling and the flakes even worse, because they dry out the skin. The flakes you see often indicate an overly dry scalp in need of hydration and exfoliation. This - like hair loss - can be seasonal. Our message: wait a little while before adding an anti-dandruff shampoo to your shopping cart and thoroughly moisturize and exfoliate your scalp first. Most likely, the flakes and itchy feeling will disappear after a while.

MYTH #3:
HAIR OIL MAKES YOUR HAIR GREASY

Putting oil on your hair seems like a crazy idea, but a hair oil will make your hair look shiny without making it greasy - trust us. Using an oil on the lengths and ends of your hair not only nourishes it, but also makes it healthier and shinier. However, if you apply too much oil to your scalp, it will cause your hair to become greasy. After all, it's the ends that need the nourishment the most. PS: A little goes a long way, because an oil is so powerful you only need a small amount to give your hair back its shine.

MYTH #4:
STRESS MAKES YOUR HAIR TURN GRAY

The color of your hair is determined by a pigment called melanin. Hair turns gray when that melanin is exhausted, meaning there is no more pigment in your hair. Once a hair follicle produces hair, the color is fixed. As you get older, these hair follicles produce less color and your hair will therefore turn gray. Good news, stress does not make your hair gray faster. However, stress can cause your hair to become thinner and fall out faster.

MYTH #5:
RINSING YOUR HAIR WITH COLD WATER IS HEALTHIER

If we have to believe social media, washing your hair with cold water is the secret to shiny hair, but is this really true? After an extensive Google search, we had not become much wiser, so we set to work ourselves. We found out that there are benefits to both washing with hot and cold water. For example, washing with warm water removes impurities better. Washing with cold water is good for the blood circulation. So we don't have a clear 'yes' or 'no' for you, we suggest to test it out yourself.
